Snetterton the first two rounds

April 30th/ May 1st. THE FIRST RACES OF 2006
Snetterton 1st and 2nd rounds

The first races of the 2006 MR2 Challenge was fast approaching and due to weather and delays in the engine parts being machined, we were going to struggle to be ready, so, Stuart used two weeks holiday entitlement to push on and get the new car ready, we got the car finished on the Tuesday before Snetterton, unfortunately as we have completely rebuilt the engine we had no time to put any miles on the engine or run it in as you might say.
So we decided to test at Snetterton on the Thursday before the race meeting to try and run in the new motor a bit. So we arrived at Snetterton really early Thursday ready for a full days testing, we got parked up and met some one we know George Taylor of last years XL Autos also in the Challenge 2nd in the championship last year! We had a chat and rushed ready for the first track session at nine am, it was dry weather at this point and I got kitted up in suit, boots and helmet I don’t wear racing gloves as I don’t like gloves in general and I have a great racing wheel so grip isn’t a problem.
So off I went with my instructions “DO NOT REV OVER 5000!” boring! But I obeyed, all through the first session and the second, the sessions are roughly three quarters of an hour if no one goes off and it gets red flagged.
Then stop for dinner and a chat again, George had developed a problem with his car, but by then Cheshire racing had turned up ready for the week end, and a couple of there renting drivers were booked in for an afternoon testing, they had ambled over to assist George so we left them to it. At this point the heavens opened and rain it did, very heavily at first, then it became a constant drenching that kept on the rest of the day, however we had paid so off I went, it was that bad we debated on changing to the wet tyres we have, as oil flags were being put out at every marshal point and cars were going off and having huge slides every where, apart from me toot ling round at my 5000 revs watching in amusement, the other MR2 guys testing didn’t go out much but I just kept going round and around and around. I came in ready for a cuppa before my last session of the day to Stuart saying go on then give it some, “in this!” so I had a go, the car felt great, shame the track didn’t! But even in that I went a full second quicker than last year and that was in the dry!
